As stated on the previous page, crowing is a great way to check the embouchure, use of air and quality of reed. When you crow properly, a mix of frequencies will occur producing a single pitch around F. Scan the QR Code to the right to hear a crow sound being correctly played.

Below are some of the most common incorrect sounds that are heard when crowing and solutions for how to correct them. If you are not sure which sound you are making, scan the QR code to hear what the incorrect sounds sound like and you can reverse engineer the solution.

Always check the reed to be sure the equipment is set up for your success. Take your 6" metal ruler and measure top of the wire to tip of the reed. If that distance on a fully soaked reed is less than 30mm, you can assume your will be sharp. You will need use your pliers to move the wires back until the distance from the top of the wires to the tip of the reed is 30mm.

The following are not in any order. Know that if you make too significant of an adjustment in one area you may create another sound that is listed somewhere else. We want to be sure that we know how each sound is created and what adjustments can be made to get a desire sound.

Crow is too high/too few sounds.

This means that embouchure is too tight/too pinched.
How to fix it:
  • Decrease the pressure in the embouchure.

Crow is too low.

This means either there is a lack of support to "dampen the reed" or the reed is too long.
How to fix it:
  • Add support to dampen the reed.
  • Change the length and/or width of the reed.

Unsupported sound of F

This mean either there is a lack of support in the lower jaw or a lack of air support from the diaphragm.
How to fix it:
  • Slightly increase the pressure in the lower jaw.
  • Use a faster airstream with more support from the diaphragm.
