Kevin Kurtz is the assistant director of bands at Jefferson High School (est. 2021) in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He graduated from South Dakota State University with a degree in Music Education (2017) and is a 3rd year candidate in the American Band College.

Kevin began his teaching career in his hometown of Parkston, SD where he taught 4-12 instrumental music from ‘17-‘20. He then moved to Sioux Falls to be a long-term substitute teacher, working with numerous elementary, middle school and high school bands until being hired at Jefferson High School.

At Jefferson High School, Kevin directs the Concert Band, the Varsity Band 1 of 2 Freshman Bands, and Jefferson Steel (steel pan ensemble). He assists with Symphonic Band, and the other Freshman Band. He also teaches beginning guitar. Outside of the school day, Kevin also works with the Cavalier Marching Band, the Pep Band, and founded the Cavalier Indoor Drumline. He also seeks opportunities to develop the music program's resources by apply for grants to fill the new school's library. Since 2022, he has received just under $6000 in grant funding for his proposals "Installing a Mirror in the Music", "Developing Musicians Through Solo & Ensemble Repertoire" and "Harmony in the Room".

Outside of the classroom, Kevin has used his past experience as a DCI performer and instructor to educate numerous marching bands and help found three indoor drumlines in South Dakota. He has worked with the Summer Youth Band in Sioux Falls and is currently on the Board of Directors for a local non-profit drumline (SuFuDu).

When Kevin is not in front of a music ensemble, you can find him spending time with his wife, family, friends and two dogs, Stormy and Sage.

This project was completed in partial fulfilment of the program requirements at the American Band College of Central Washington University
